The Lavelle Road in Bengaluru is named after an Irish soldier named Michael F. Lavelle who had made remarkable changes to the region during the British colonial period.

In the mid 1850s, Michael F. Lavelle who was serving the British military in Europe grew tired of incessant fighting for too long and asked for a transfer. His request was granted, and he was taken to the Cantonment of Bangalore, where he works in the capacity of the chief commissioner of the Mysore State.
As soon as Lavelle landed, he made his way to Kolar, where he was able to find some traces of gold for the first time. Even though he was not in a position to begin any mining activities himself, his finding and remedy about Kolar’s gold reserves were however important. Later the mining contract was given to John Taylor & Company who managed to mine a lot of gold. Such a mining boom produced great income which was important in improving the Bangalore Mysore region.
Michael F Lavelle served from 1909-1912 as chief commissioner of Mysore state. In his tenure, Bangalore and Mysore region saw the most infrastructural developments. Hence The road was named after him as a way to acknowledge his contributions to the city’s development during the British colonial period.
